Using every last inch of my legs, I dart into the road, taking strides as big as my height will allow.

The car redirects.

I’m not going to make it.

And then, something slams into me, knocking the breath from my lungs.

He takes the brunt of the fall, rolling under me to protect my face from colliding with the asphalt, but the force of the impact knocks me out of his arms and sends me skidding across the road into the grass.

The car speeds past without a second’s pause, disappearing on a sharp turn. Waiting in agony for my lungs to fill again, I struggle to gasp for breath, a fish stranded on the dock.

“Are you okay?” He sounds frantic as he crawls toward me, cupping my face in his hands while he checks my body for injuries. This time, I know I’m not hallucinating.

Dark wings sprout from his back, casting the night further into shadow. My stomach aches as I sputter a few fragmented sentences before I can get the words to form.
